It’s the most wonderful time of the year, and not just because the biggest Christmas tree in HZ history is adorning our front lobby in all of its tinsel-y glory. Every year, CEO Jerry and COO Glenn are tasked with setting up our tree before the staff is invited to the lobby to indulge in some spiked eggnog and hang an ornament or two. (Not necessarily in that order.) Personally, this is one of my favorite HZ traditions. I especially love the extra cheer that seems to be in the air. Maybe it’s the rum; maybe it’s the cookies. Perhaps it’s the hint at celebrations to come. While we tend to start the season with our Christmas tree lighting, we also get together one more time before everyone leaves for the holidays for an extra-festive happy hour. While this celebration may be the last of the year, there are plenty of other traditions that keep our office interesting. Here are a few of the highlights:
The Holiday Party. Every January, HZ’ers get dressed up, grab a date and head over to the HZ holiday party to celebrate the last 365 days and kick off the ones ahead. Recovery may not be easy, but what can we say: work hard, play even harder.
Cereal De Mayo. Who doesn’t love a day where you can live out your childhood dreams of mixing as many cereals as you want to create the perfect bowl? Everyone is welcome to join this sugar-fest, so long as they bring a box of favorite cereal to share. (HZ provides the bowls and milk.) I’m always amazed at the variety we end up with!
HZ’s Oktoberfest. We can thank HZ’s official beer club members for their expertise here. They help us pick and pour six beers to sample, while telling us a little bit about each selection. After snacking on German fare, playing cornhole, and dancing to polka tunes — depending on how many of the six we’ve sampled — we vote for our favorite brew.
Halloween. It’s nearly impossible to talk about traditions without mentioning Halloween. This is one of those holidays where we go all out, because Halloween is serious business around here. Don’t believe me? Check out this year’s costumes. Even some HZ offspring got in on the action.
