How long have you been at HZ?
Coming up on 7 years. Time flies when you’re at HZ.
Do you listen to music while you’re at work? What’s your favorite designing music?
The constant buzz in the pit is a rock ’n’ roll concert all its own—which I absolutely love. But when I do go for the ear buds, mixes of funky hip-hop, blues, and rock usually get the job done.
What’s one of the most challenging or difficult things about designing that non-designers might not realize?
Knowing when to stop. We tend to want to try everything and we often over-design in doing so. The hard part of the process is distilling an idea down to its purest and most beautiful form. Combine that with our tight deadlines, and it can be quite the challenge.
Are there any brands you would consider a dream client?
I’ve always thought it would be fun to design alcohol packaging (surprise!). Working with a fearless brand with a lot of attitude, like Flying Dog, would be awesome.
Every creative has little identifying marks, qualities, and techniques—how would you describe yours?
I keep it surreal. I love using elements in unexpected places that not only help tell the story, but also give our audience a clever surprise. Positive/negative visuals always get me pumped up.
What other designers inspire you? Who do you think is doing great work?
I’ve been following a dude by the name of Nathan Yoder lately. His vintage hand-lettering typographic style is badass. Check him out.
Who do you want to nominate to be our next featured designer?
The talented, courageous Jungeun Kim!
