Do you ever find yourself questioning the difference between a Project Manager and an Account Executive? It’s a fair question. In my nearly two years here, I’ve heard many attempts from fellow HZers to solve the above-mentioned mystery (some more successful than others). My favorite (and this is a real quote from a coworker who shall remain nameless): PMs do similar work as AEs, but they don’t have those cubicle things. I loved this—it made my day. And, while I suppose it isn’t exactly false, it definitely does not address the question at hand. So, in an effort to better inform those that find themselves wondering, I present to you the definition of the HZ Project Manager. And because my goal here is to entertain as well as to educate, I could find no better way than to spit wisdom in the form of a jingle.
Within the office of HZDG.
You’ll notice a cave, and inside it you’ll see,
A team of PMs, who seem to be,
working in the dark, in front of large screens.
Nocturnal workers, led by Jp.
So now that you know, it’s time to proceed—
By describing us colleagues, not known as AEs.
Websites on websites. Budgets on code.
Briefs upon briefs. Github is home.
If it’s a tech question you have. An answer we’ll provide.
If you give us the time. We’ll open your eyes wide.
Sorta-kinda, we speak dev. To an extent anyways.
On occasion, devs speak PM. It depends on the day.
Scope rules all when programming is on mind—
When creative is awesome, is the budget behind?
Questions. Red flags. Suggestions. Early on.
No surprises. Plan ahead. Just like that: project done.
So please rest assured. With context, we’re good.
The point to keep in mind, which should be understood:
What you’re asking, we’ve seen - so many times.
So when you request our help, “Sure thing!” we will reply.
Because for a website to breathe. It first needs to go live.
And without a PM. It may rather die.
So if it’s an interactive interaction that you seek.
And your goal is to launch in “less than X weeks,”
Please send the corresponding context over this way.
Let’s get this project managed, together - today.
Well blog readers, of this blog from HZ.
Can you now tell the difference between PMs and AEs?
In cubicles, you already know, we don't stay.
We’re nocturnal peeps with screens, beneath the cave.
But there’s much more to us, that we show everyday.
Sometimes we’re simple. Sometimes we’re cray.
Whatever we are, you’ll almost certainly find,
that in the info presented, we take much pride.
I hope you understand, but if not - I tried,
by rhyming my words, to convey a PM defined.
