Tattoos Of HZ—Part Three

If you don’t already have one, don’t even try to tell me the thought hasn’t crossed your mind to get a tattoo after reading this and this. But hey, if you still need a little bit more inspiration, or want to learn more about your fellow HZers, read on!

Shereeta Cropper, Media Supervisor

How long have you been at HZ?

Almost a year.

When did you get your tattoo(s)? 2006.

Why did you decide to get one? I always liked the Egyptian life symbol, the Ankh. I knew if I got a tattoo it would have to be meaningful.

Did you cry? No, it didn’t hurt much on my leg. It was way more annoying than it was painful.

What did your mom/dad/grandparent/most judgmental person you know say about it? My aunt said, “That's going to look dumb when you’re 80.”

Do you have any regrets? No, not at all. I still think it’s pretty cool.

How long have you been at HZ?

 3 years.

When did you get your tattoo(s)? August 2014.

Share your experience. I was walking in the Beyoğlu district of Istanbul with my wife. There was this ridiculous pastry shop we kept passing that had a mountain of spiraled baklava in the window that was coated with an endless fountain of honey. It was the kind of place you couldn’t ignore or turn down. That’s when I decided to walk into the tattoo parlor next door and get inked instead.

Why did you decide to get one? It made the baklava I got afterwards seem more rewarding.

Any words of wisdom to share? This is a great tattoo, but you probably shouldn’t get it on your face.

How long have you been at HZ?

 7+ years.

When did you get your tattoo(s)? 2009.

Why did you decide to get one? My goal is to get a star for every year of my life on this earth. Some have designs that have special meaning, others are just for the shape. It took me forever to settle on a design I knew I would not grow tired of and that could grow with me.

Did you cry? No, it didn’t hurt all that much. But I am ticklish, so we had to stop from time to time because I was laughing.

Do you want more? Absolutely.

Melissa Astorga, Account Executive

How long have you been at HZ? 7 months.

When did you get your tattoo(s)? When I was 21.

Share your experience. I went to NYC for a job interview at YSL. After the interview, I grabbed a drink (or three) with a friend and decided to go get tattoos at the place below her apartment. The man who gave me the tattoo had implants in his arms that made him kind of look like a dinosaur. It was crazy, cheap, and so fun.

Why did you decide to get one? Growing up, I had always joked with my family that I would one day get this tattoo. My parents had lived in Japan for several years, but moved back right before I was born. My father would always say I needed a tag (like the inside of t-shirts) that indicated I was Made in Japan. It’s in Spanish as a nod to him being from Guatemala.

Do you want more? I think I will probably stick with the one, but who knows.

Sean Leenaerts, Senior Writer

How long have you been at HZ?

Two and a half years.

When did you get your tattoo(s)? December 2006.

Why did you decide to get one? Triathlon is a very important part of my life and, after having just completed my 20th Ironman-distance triathlon (which had been completed in pouring rain and cold), I decided to get an M-dot tattoo to show my commitment. Madame Pele (the island goddess of the Hawaii) must have approved, because a few months later I won a slot to the Ironman World Championship in Kona, Hawaii.

Do you want more? I don’t have any others… but I’d consider getting another.

Do you have any regrets? Absolutely none. I was sober when I did it, after all.

Any words of wisdom to share? Shop around tattoo places, and take the time to go through the portfolios of the artists. Don’t do it drunk. And for Chrissakes—don’t get your initials (you’re not monogramming a shirt) or the name of a girlfriend/boyfriend (if you think a breakup sucks, wait until you go through the pain and expense of tattoo removal).

Well, that’s it… for now.
