How long have you been at HZ?
Almost eight years—since June 2008.
How would you describe your design style?
Feminine. I am drawn to the beauty of negative space and difference in scales, contrast, bold patterns and black and white (and pink!). Glittery and shiny foils are a plus.
Is there a trend in design that you really love or hate?
I don’t love anything in particular right now, because everything out there is pretty good. But, I hate design from the ’90s. More specifically, the early ’90s. It feels like they tried too hard, dumping everything in a layout and completely cluttering the white space. There’s no hierarchy and too much color. Simply too much.
Are there any brands you would consider a dream client?
Beauty brands, because I can use all the styles I love—glitter, shiny, foil. You name it. I can use all my favorites in the design.
What inspired your wallpaper design?
I looked for a quote I could relate to, and then remembered this one that I’d come across a long time ago: “The Mona Lisa is overrated.” I thought, “Wow, that is so true.” I’m in the art industry, but there are things I don’t understand. It’s a great painting, but da Vinci has many other works and contributions that deserve praise. There are certain works that are created at the right time, with the right audience, so they just get more buzz. The faint smile is a symbol of the painting as a whole—it’s the most recognizable piece. (Plus the fact that she has no eyebrows!)
What other designers inspire you? Who do you think is doing great work?
There’s no one right now that I’m following, but I pull inspiration from Pinterest often. I like it because it’s the gathering place of everyone who’s creative—photographers, artists, and designers.
Who do you want to nominate to be our next featured designer?
Kirsten Quisenberry at HZNY!
